Louisiana releasing more than 1,900 inmates early; here’s why

The guiding light of criminal justice reform has been the fact that being the incarceration capital of the world has not made us any safer for the last decade. Today's release is the first step and we have many more to go. The good news is that we have a committed, bipartisan team of legislators, sheriffs, victim advocacy groups, district attorneys, business leaders and community stakeholders who are determined to work together to invest in our state and find the best path forward.

Building Coalitions: Criminal Justice Reform and the Budget

Last Thursday, the Governor signed ten new bills into law that were born out of the Justice Reinvestment Task Force. Over the next 10 years, this legislative package will reduce our incarceration rate by 10%, save the state $262 Million in the middle of a budget crisis, and reinvest more than $180 Million back into public safety.
